Enpure secures Pre-Treatment contract for the Escondida Water Supply ‘Expansion’ Project

Enpure has secured a US$10 million contract with BHP for the supply of 20 Pressurised Dual Media Filters (DMF) for the Pre-treatment of the Escondida Water Supply ‘expansion’ project in Chile, Latin America.

Enpure is responsible for the Process Design, Mechanical Design, and the fabrication of the rubber-lined DMF vessels, complete with internal fittings and media installation.Enpure will utilise its large DfMA factory in Changwon, South Korea so that all of the 20 DMF vessels can be shipped to site in a single consignment following factory inspection and hydraulic testing. Each of the twin cell DMF vessels will measure 12.5m long by 4m diameter and weigh 56 tons.

This is the second competitive contract Enpure has secured for the supply of DMF vessels for the Escondida Water Supply project. In 2015, EnpureDoosan supplied 60 DMF vessels, of an identical design, for the initial 2,500 litre per second (57 million gallons a day) Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant. The SWRO plant is located 20 Km south of Antofagasta, in northern Chile then the treated water is pumped from the coastal location to the Escondida Copper Mine, which is located 180 km away and 3,100m above sea level in the Atacama Desert. The additional 20 DMF vessels will help increase the treated water capacity to 3,200 litres per second (73 million gallons a day).

In recognition of its size and complexity, the Escondida Water Supply (EWS) project was recently awarded ‘Industrial Desalination Plant of the Year’ at the 2017 Global Water Summit in Madrid, Spain.
